Abstract
Evidence from existing literature suggests that herbal preparations may aid individuals in smoking cessation. However, a comprehensive understanding of the role of herbal drugs in mitigating the broader health effects associated with smoking remains limited and fragmented. A search was carried out using major scientific databases including Pubmed, Google scholar, and the Cochrane Library. Eligible studies were screened and evaluated for clinical and preclinical evidence regarding the therapeutic effects of Gymnema sylvestre, Cuminum cyminum, and Allium sativum in the context of smoking-related health consequences. The review highlights that these herbal agents demonstrate promising pharmacological properties, such as antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying effects, which may contribute to the reduction of smoking-induced physiological damage like increased insulin resistance, increased reactive oxygen species and increased LDL. Clinical evidence remains preliminary but indicates potential supportive benefits in reducing oxidative stress, improving metabolic balance, and alleviating symptoms linked to chronic tobacco use. The findings provide initial evidence supporting the role of selected herbal drugs in reducing the adverse health outcomes of smoking with reference to classical Siddha text Nanjumurivunool. Further well-designed, large-scale clinical trials in combination with conventional therapies are warranted to validate these results and strengthen the evidence base.
