The Publication Activity and Migration Trends of SSH Ukrainian Scientists During the First Two Years of the Russo-Ukrainian War

This study examines the publication activity and migration patterns of Ukrainian scholars in the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) during the first two years of the Russo-Ukrainian war. It aims to understand the resilience and adaptability of these scholars in continuing their academic work amidst conflict.Focusing on scholars who published at least three papers during this period, the study utilizes data from the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) to analyse their publication activities. It also investigates the role of international collaborations in sustaining SSH research in Ukraine. The findings reveal that Ukrainian SSH scholars have demonstrated sustained publication activity despite the conflict. Their scientific contributions have persisted under adverse conditions. International collaborations have been crucial in supporting Ukrainian SSH research, primarily through joint research projects rather than relocation to foreign institutions. This study provides novel insights into the resilience and adaptability of Ukrainian SSH scholars during significant geopolitical instability. It underscores the importance of international collaboration in sustaining academic research under adverse conditions, offering a detailed analysis of how such collaborations can support scholars in conflict zones.
