Abstract
Introduction
Hydroxy apatite nanoparticles are a material of choice for biomedical application owing to its properties like biocompatibility and bioactivity. But there are concerns regarding the safety of these nanoparticles. Green synthesis offers an alternate method for the development of these nanoparticles with improved functionalization, eco-friendliness and lesser harmful effects.
Materials and Methods
Citrus reticulata and Citrus limonum peel extract mediated hydroxy apatite nanoparticles and nanocomposites were synthesized. The cytotoxicity evaluation of the synthesized samples was carried out using MTT assay on fibroblast cell line.
Results
At lower concentrations, Citrus reticulata and limonum mediated hydroxy apatite nanoparticles and nanocomposites exhibited negligible or mild toxicity. When concentrations increased, moderate levels of cytotoxicity were observed but nowhere near IC50 lethal dose.
Conclusion
Dose dependant cytotoxicity was observed for both Citrus reticulata and limonum mediated hydroxy apatite nanoparticles and nanocomposites. Since IC50 is not reached, the material is considered relatively biocompatible and safe.
