Abstract
Introduction
Wrightia tinctoria Latex has been found to have an antifungal effect but its therapeutic use is limited because of low stability and low bioavailability.
Aim
To prepare a niosomal in situ gel formulation that enhances the antifungal efficacy and the stability of Wrightia tinctoria Latex.
Materials and Methods
Niosomes were made from Span 60 and cholesterol, which contained Wrightia tinctoria Latex, and were added to an in situ gel containing Carbopol and HPMC. The physio-chemical characteristics of the formulation, the drug delivery profile and the antifungal effects of the formulation were determined.
Results
The niosome formulation showed an entrapment efficiency of 73%, a prolonged drug release over 8 hr, and better antifungal activities on both Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger when compared to crude Latex.
Conclusion
A niosomal in situ gel formulation has increased the stability, the drug release and the antifungal effects of Wrightia tinctoria Latex, providing an opportunity for the use of this product in a clinical setting as an anti-fungal agent for treating skin fungal infections.
