Abstract
Background/Objectives
Sauromatum venosum (Aiton) Kunth (Araceae) is a wild edible and medicinal plant traditionally used for the treatment of parasitic, infectious and other ailments. Despite its ethnomedicinal importance, systematic pharmacognostical standards for this species are lacking. The present study aims to establish comprehensive pharmacognostic and phytochemical parameters for the leaves and tubers of S. venosum to support its correct identification, quality controland standardization.
Materials and Methods
Authenticated plant material was subjected to detail macroscopic, microscopic, physicochemicaland fluorescence analyses following WHO and pharmacopoeial guidelines. Preliminary phytochemical screening was performed using successive solvent extractsand heavy metal content was evaluated to assess safety.
Results
Morphological and microscopical investigations revealed distinct diagnostic features, including characteristic vascular arrangements and parenchymatous storage tissue with abundant starch grains. Physicochemical evaluation showed acceptable limits of foreign matter, ash values and moisture content. Phytochemical analysis demonstrated the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, phenolics, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, steroidsand terpenoids. Fluorescence analysis provided characteristic color reactions, while heavy metal analysis confirmed that arsenic and lead levels were within permissible limits.
Conclusion
This study establishes scientifically validated pharmacognostical and phytochemical standards for S. venosum, providing a reliable reference for quality control, authentication and future pharmacological investigations.
