Abstract
Background: The genus Cissus (Vitaceae) is known for its medicinal properties. Cissus quadrangularis is a well-known medicinal plant used in traditional medicine for bone healing. Objective: The present study was aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of the methanolic extract of Cissus quadrangularis (MECQ) in experimental animal models. Materials and Methods: The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model, and analgesic activity was evaluated using acetic acid-induced writhing and hot plate methods in mice. Results: MECQ at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg showed significant (P < 0.01) anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced rat paw edema. In analgesic models, MECQ exhibited significant (P < 0.01) reduction in the number of writhes in acetic acid-induced writhing test and increased the reaction time in hot plate method. Conclusion: The results suggest that MECQ possesses significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities, which supports its traditional use.
